![]() | Currently Featuring: TD68 Habenaria rhodocheila. Thailand. Our featured item this week is this spectacular terrestrial orchid from Southeast Asia. Habenaria is a very large genus of perhaps 600-800 species found in tropical grasslands extending across Asia, Africa, and South America. These plants have foliage which dies down after flowering, while the fleshy tubers "rest". Consider this: most of the world's terrestrial orchids have evolved to withstand harsh or seasonally dry environments and then to quickly send up their growths and flower when the rainy season commences or when conditions become conducive. Habenaria rhodocheila is one of the dramatic species. Very colorful heads of many fuchsia pink, lightly fragrant flowers on attractive foliage. Contrary to what you might think, H. rhodocheila is a very easy plant to grow and flower and we have been able to propagate many plants from a single plant acquired years ago. We will send with the plant a free updated culture sheet explaining our secret and simple culture method. RIGHT NOW, IN JUNE AND JULY, IS THE BEST TIME TO PURCHASE THIS SPECIES. The plants are growing and will mature and initiate flower spikes soon after you receive the plant. Highly recommended, and a good introduction to understanding and appreciating terrestrial orchids. | ![]() | ||
