Correctly Stenotyla picta. This is really a neat plant - one of my favorites within the fan-shaped leafy species. This flowers a lot and puts on a good show (flowers emerge and can be seen, they are not hiding in the foliage. (Good to hang it up or mount it, if possible - for good display). Moderate-size species - not gigantic like some. In this cultivar, the flowers are all-yellow.

TD321 Cynorkis gibbosa.
Madagascar..

Cynorkis gibbosa.

Gallery
A really special and elite terrestrial species, found growing in humid and shady conditions along streams on granite boulders. Nice mottled foliage. It is deciduous and lives underground part of the year – but is amazingly easy to grow. Very striking heads of cinnabar red and orange flowers. Some plants are just beginning to pop up right now – availability depends on the growth being up enough for us to ship it. Our little secret: we’ve discovered that Cynorkis aren’t as nearly as seasonal as Habenarias – they can put up growths at any time of year!

TD308 Cynorkis guttata.
Madagascar..

Cynorkis guttata.

Gallery
Cynorkis guttata is a new species described in The Orchid Review in Sept. 2007. Fabulous terrestrial orchid with bright two-tone colors. Plant dies back after flowering. Later, lush new growths come up quickly and put out an erect spike with a large umbel-like head of many (17) beautiful good-size flowers which are light pink with red dots and bright red centers. Really magnificent and easy to grow. Interestingly, unlike say, our Habenaria rhodocheila, these plants seem to send up new growths and flower at any time of the year! THESE ARE STARTING TO SHOW THEIR NEW GROWTH NOW.

Dendrobium aberrans.

Gallery
Still one of our most popular species. Mossy intermediate forests. “Miniature” clumping plants produce small sprays of 1/2" interestingly shaped white flowers, which last about three weeks. Old pseudobulbs keep sending out inflorescences for many years. Can flower anytime, with an emphasis on winter. “On trees in the forests of the Maboro Range (Waria District). The species grows always in colonies…” (Schlecter 1914) Very cute - a winner.

Dendrobium formosum var. giganteum.

Gallery
"The Beautiful Giant-Flowered Dendrobium". The species formosum is found in the foothills of the Himalayas from Nepal to Northern Thailand, and is a cooler-growing higher-elevation plant. However, the variety Giganteum is a warmer-growing, larger-flowered plant from lower elevations in India. Very showy displays of large crystalline white flowers with yellow or orange in the lips on attractive plants (plants reach 18" in height). Used to be fairly common here in Hawaii 30 years ago, but like so many things, has now vanished from collections.

Dendrobium stratiotes.

Gallery
A classsic! Large epiphyte has short spikes which emerge along canes carrying large long-lasting white “antelope type” flowers with tall yellow multi-twisted petals. White lip is vividly striped with purple. Likes warmth and bright light. Many of these antelope-type Dendrobiums were brought to Hawaii by Marines returning from the Pacific at the end of World War II. “One of the most striking of the Spatulatas and a firm favorite in hybrid work” (Millar, 1999) Ms. Millar described her 1974 patrol on a trawler on the Bernsbach River in Western District, Papua. Upon finding this species for the first time in New Guinea, she said that they were euphoric about the number and size of the plants hanging over the river. “I think it was the best and happiest patrol I was ever on."

Correctly D. bracteosum ‘Mr. Tan’s’, or also known as D. bracteosum var. tannii. Kew does not list D. tanii as a valid species name. It does differ from the regular bracteosum in its more compact growth habit and larger flowers. Small to medium warm-growing epiphyte, with flowers that last a very long time, 3 months or longer. Hopefully pink will come out, but in our previous experiences with Den. bracteosum itself, whites with colored lips also resulted)

TOF3279 Lycaste (skinneri x brevispatha) x brevispatha

No Image Available

The (skinneri x brevispatha) is a very successful and beautiful hybrid created by Kathy's late friend, Sr. Andres Maduro at Finca Dracula in Panama. I think his idea was to make something with large beautiful pink flowers, which would be warm-tolerant (due to the warm and pink-colored L. brevispatha), and in this he greatly succeeded! It grows easily at our place, whereas L. skinneri does not. Moving on now to a second generation, a selfing would have been great, but that apparently is not in the cards. So here, I instead have tried a "backcross" with brevispatha. This will make a very warm-tolerant plant with numerous showy pink flowers, albeit the flowers will be smaller than in Mr. Maduro's fantastic hybrid. This is a fun and promising project - I hope you will try it.

Mediocalcar decoratum.

Fabulous genus - 53 species have been described from mountainous New Guinea, but perhaps this should be reduced to less than 15. Small creeping or clumping epiphytes with many small colorful bell-shaped flowers. This one has orange blooms with yellow tips, like candy corn. M. decoratum is apparently from a little lower elevation and warmer-tolerant, so grows very well. Forms beautiful specimens rapidly - we just received a CCE/AOS for our plant!

Phal. tetraspis is a plant especially worth noting... It is very free-flowering... bearing a rich panicle of ivory white flowers in the way of P. violacea... (E.S. Berkely, Orchid Review, 1893). Sprays of pure waxy white flowers with or without random purple transverse bars. This species is especially cute when blooming at a small size - the ones I had at our big County Fair orchid show sold within minutes. Very limited
