TOF2837 Cattleya gaskelliana alba x Schomburgkia superbiens alba.

No Image Available

Ha ha. We’ve had success with Schombocattleyas in the past. (I hope many of you got our Schombocattleya. Louis Fuchs for example) This one tries for white flowers with the beautiful crisped edges of the Schomburgkia …. but without the very long inflorescence. White color is not for certain. Something new for the orchid show or the display table at society meetings.

Very rare and beautiful form of this most atypical cattleya species. Not available in the market. Flowers are a soft pink color all over. Unlike the typical forms that are pink with lavender tube. C. lawrenceana is not typical of other labiate cattleyas, with its tall slender bulbs, and many flowers with the tube-like lips. Some albas could also result from this selfing, which would be wonderful and amazing.

Venezuela..

Very showy Venezuelan endemic is called ‘Flor de Mayo’. Found in lowlands from sea level up to 2100 ft in areas of low precipitation. Reichenbach first mentions the species in Xenia Orchidaceae in 1854. The plant flowered in the famous collection of Mr. Pescatore of Paris. Reichenbach recognized it as a new species and dedicated it to Pescatore’s gardener Mr. Lueddemann, one of the best gardeners of France. (Monograph of the Venezuelan Cattleyas, Aulisi 1989) The ‘Jim Elmore’ cultivar is a large, open-flowered example of the variety C. lueddemanniana var. lueddemanniana. It has wide petals and full round lip. The color is medium lavender with dark lavender on front of lip and dark lavender veins in throat.

Be forewarned – this flower is NOT blue. However it IS an extraordinary flower of quality form and presentation. A beautiful soft-pink all over – sort of like a “concolor” variety.  A really special and elite terrestrial species, found growing in humid and shady conditions along streams on granite boulders. Nice mottled foliage. It is deciduous and lives underground part of the year – but is amazingly easy to grow. Very striking heads of cinnabar red and orange flowers. Some plants are just beginning to pop up right now – availability depends on the growth being up enough for us to ship it.  Cynorkis guttata is a new species described in The Orchid Review in Sept. 2007. Fabulous terrestrial orchid with bright two-tone colors. Plant dies back after flowering. Later, lush new growths come up quickly and put out an erect spike with a large umbel-like head of many (17) beautiful good-size flowers which are light pink with red dots and bright red centers. Really magnificent and easy to grow. Interestingly, unlike say, our Habenaria rhodocheila, these plants seem to send up new growths and flowers at any time of the year!  A classsic! Large epiphyte has short spikes which emerge along canes carrying large long-lasting white “antelope type” flowers with tall yellow multi-twisted petals. White lip is vividly striped with purple. Likes warmth and bright light. Many of these antelope-type Dendrobiums were brought to Hawaii by Marines returning from the Pacific at the end of World War II. “One of the most striking of the Spatulatas and a firm favorite in hybrid work” (Millar, 1999) Ms. Millar described her 1974 patrol on a trawler on the Bernsbach River in Western District, Papua. Upon finding this species for the first time in New Guinea, she said that they were euphoric about the number and size of the plants hanging over the river. “I think it was the best and happiest patrol I was ever on."

One of the most popular plants in our nursery has been Epicat Frances Dyer ‘Foxes Plum’ AM/AOS (Cattleya bowringiana x Epi. fragrans) – given to us by one of our customers. It has up to 10 plum-colored non-resupinate flowers per spike. Really wonderful plant shows signs of “blue” blood so we used it with one of our coerulea gaskellianas. Should be really nice, with nice color. Update; the first small plant bloomed with gorgeous flower shape.

Actually the ‘Original’, the giant plant in our “botanical garden” died several years ago after it was blown down by a big storm – so this will be the last batch of seedlings for a while. "This is perhaps the largest of all orchid species…” (Seidenfaden, Wood, 1992) Pseudobulbs reach 9 ft in length, 21 ft in some extreme cases! Flower spikes to 6 or 7 ft. with many 4" showy flowers that last well. Yellow with chestnut blotches all over. This beautiful cultivar has a contrasting solid red lip. These seedlings will take a long time to reach blooming, but we know some of you would like to get started now.
