(Myrmecophila exaltata) Large to giant hot-growing lowland epiphyte has long tall spike (7 ft) with many (to 80) beautiful bright colorful flowers. In this unusual select variety, the 2-inch flowers with undulated sepals and petals are orange, with purple on the lip and orangey in the throat. While we have a lot of beautiful and rare schomburgkias in our collection; exaltata remains one of my favorites, very cheery to look at. Photo courtesy of Arnold Gum.

TOF3038 Schomburgkia lueddemannii `Really Really Nice' x self.
Costa Rica, Panama..

I actually do not remember what this looks like! The ‘Really Really Nice’ is the note I made on the seed capsule tag at the time. These are large warm-growing epiphytes with long spikes with heads of flowers at the ends. In general. lueddemanniii has narrow, very undulated petals and sepals which are dark red brown, the lip side lobes are red or lavender.

TOF2677 Sobralia callosa.
Panama.

Sobralia callosa.

Gallery
If you always wanted to grow Sobralias but were put off by their large size - then this is for you. This "mini-Sobralia" also happens to have the brightest hot pink colored flowers! Good-sized blossoms too. The mature parent plant is now about 18" tall and very clumpy. I think it had around 45 flowers at once displayed beautifully around the plant. Beautiful interesting foliage too. As you know, Sobralia flowers are short lived (one or two days) but plant blooms over and over from the same canes throughout a season (Fall/Winter). We are the first to propagate this rare and desirable species from seed.

Rare offering! Great species does have a deciduous habit, but this is not a problem – very easy to grow and maintain. Small in stature with thin erect pikes of several or many beautiful 1 ½” round, bright yellow flowers. This is nothing like S. kimballiana or S. gracilis, so please don’t be confused. This is really nice.

TD434 Tolumnia sylvestris `Natural World' CCE/AOS
Hispanola and Cuba..

No Image Available

This is a division of our CCE/AOS plant which received Best In Show and the Governor's Trophy at our big County Fair Show a few years back. It had 1400 flowers at that time!. The pink color is pale, the value of this cultivar is really in the floriferousness and ease of culture. T. sylvestris carries more flowers per spike than other similar species. These low-elevation species grow dry and bright in bushes, grass, and on dead trees and cactus. For this reason we grow them hanging in empty net pots. The CCE plant hadn’t been touched n 15 years and was basically growing in mid-air.

India - Indo China.

Vanda testacea `Bryon' x self

Gallery
Uncommon small vanda species with many attractive 3/4" yellow or orangey flowers with purple lips. You and I are not going to grind up our orchids, but it is interesting to read about this: "Vanda testacea (Lindl.) Rchb.f. known as Banda or Rasna, an alkaloid rich epiphytic species of Vandaceous orchids, is widely known for its medicinal properties. Almost all plant parts (roots, leaves, flowers) in powder form or as an extract are used as herbal medicines to cure rheumatism, bronchitis, nervous disorders, piles and inflammations as well as a potential anti-cancerous drug." (A Highly Medicinal Value Epiphytic Orchid of India, Sebastinraj, et al, 2014) It is faced with extensive collections and habitat destruction pressures.
