Reichenbach first mentions the species in Xenia Orchidaceae in 1854. The plant flowered in the famous collection of Mr. Pescatore of Paris. Reichenbach recognized it as a new species and dedicated it to Pescatore’s gardener Mr. Lueddemann, one of the best gardeners of France. (Monograph of the Venezuelan Cattleyas, Aulisi 1989) It has wide petals and full round lip. The color is medium lavender with dark lavender on front of lip and dark lavender veins in throat.

This is not the form called "C. maxima var. rubra" - this is something completely different. Note: it takes a few days after the buds open for the unique color to materialize. Cattleya violacea `Orquiven' x self.

Gallery
Medium size hot-to-warm growing epiphyte. Long-lasting fragrant flowers that open up very flat. Rich lavender color, especially the lip and column. It is found along low-elevation rivers, in chosen locations, over a 4 million square kilometer area. Often growing on branches out over the water , where the plants benefit form the rising moisture, but also brighter light reflected up from the water. We are excited that we now are able to easily grow this species, using our “empty-pot method”. Limited. Botanical print by Walter Hood Fitch (1817 - 1892), illustrator, Robert Warner (1814-1896) and Benjamin Samuel Williams (1822-1890) editors [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons.

Warscewiczii is my favorite Cattleya species. Two top-quality cultivars have been used here. Hoping for whites, but we should be realistic and remember that crossing 2 albas often results in pink offspring. Either way though, these should be superior flowers - with great form and large size. Costa Rica.

Correctly Stenotyla picta. This is really a neat plant - one of my favorites within the fan-shaped leafy species. This flowers a lot and puts on a good show (flowers emerge and can be seen, they are not hiding in the foliage. (Good to hang it up or mount it, if possible - for good display). Moderate-size species - not gigantic like some. In this cultivar, the flowers are all-yellow.

Two select clones have been used for this sib cross. Within the shade-loving fan-shaped plants, it's hard to beat this. Very showy - the 4" flowers have a very pleasing aspect. Capable of putting on a big show with several flowers. Maybe best to grow it hanging up. Recommended.
